Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling resulting from worry and uncertainty, over-thinking about anticipated events, and if not curbed can lead to fear or dread about the ‘what ifs’. It is a response to perceived stress or danger involving a quick burst of adrenalin throughout the body to help the body cope with an impending problem. This is often called the ‘fight or flight’ response.

Symptoms of Anxiety

If the anxiety becomes out of proportion to the situation, if there is no real threat or danger, and if it persists for long periods, anxiety can cause a number of symptoms that can affect your comfort and well-being:

  • Feelings of uneasiness, panic
  • Tightness in the chest / shortness of breath
  • Racing heartbeat / heart palpitations
  • Problems sleeping
  • Nausea / butterflies in the stomach
  • Sweating / agitation
  • Tension / irritability
